Rod imenica (Gender of Nouns)
Noun Gender Rules
In Croatian, nouns have three genders. You can identify the gender of a noun in the Nominative Singular by its ending:
1. Masculine (muški rod): ends in a consonant:
prozor (window), stol (table), otac (father).
2. Feminine (ženski rod): ends in -a:
knjiga (book), sestra (sister), kava (coffee).
3. Neuter (srednji rod): ends in -o or -e:
selo (village), pismo (letter), sunce (sun).
Note: There are few exceptions, e.g. male names/roles ending in -a (tata - dad, kolega - colleague) are grammatically feminine in endings but masculine in agreement.
