Personal Pronouns (Nominative Case)

In Croatian, personal pronouns are used to represent the subject of a verb. Here are the basic forms in the Nominative case (the subject form):

Singular (Jednina):

ja — I

ti — you (singular, informal)

on — he / it (masculine)

ona — she / it (feminine)

ono — it (neuter)

Plural (Množina):

mi — we

vi — you (plural or polite formal singular)

oni — they (masculine or mixed group)

one — they (feminine only)

ona — they (neuter only)

Important Usage Rules

1. Omission of Pronouns: In Croatian, personal subject pronouns (ja, ti, on...) are very frequently omitted in daily conversation because the ending of the conjugated verb clearly indicates who is performing the action. For example, instead of saying Ja radim (I work), Croatians usually say just Radim.

2. Formal Address (Vi): The pronoun Vi is capitalized in writing when addressing one person formally (e.g., Kako ste Vi? - How are you?). When addressing multiple people, it remains lowercase vi.

3. Third Person Plural Genders: Croatian distinguishes gender in the plural of 'they':

oni is used for groups of men or mixed groups (e.g., 5 men and 1 woman).

one is used only for groups consisting entirely of women.

ona is used only for groups of neuter nouns (e.g., children - djeca, or fields - polja).
